Her Story
A Life Baked with Purpose
New Orleans Roots
Born and raised in New Orleans, Gwendolyn Rogers grew up surrounded by the soulful aromas of Southern cooking — pralines cooling on marble slabs, beignets dusted in powdered sugar, and layer cakes that anchored every family celebration. It was a childhood steeped in the belief that food is love made visible.
The $300,000 Dream
In 2006, Gwendolyn moved to Indiana and spent eight years baking out of a rental home, perfecting every recipe before she was ready to share them with the world. In 2014, armed with a $300,000 loan and an unshakeable vision, she opened The Cake Bake Shop in Broad Ripple Village. Within the first year, she had repaid the loan in full.
A Household Name
What followed was a decade of extraordinary recognition. Oprah named her cakes to the Favorite Things list — twice. The Cake Bake Shop expanded to Carmel City Center, then made history as the first independent restaurant to open at Walt Disney World's BoardWalk. Her debut cookbook, published with Story Farm, became an instant classic.
The Philosophy
Gwendolyn believes that every cake tells a story. She personally designs and decorates every one of her restaurants — every chandelier, every wallpaper pattern, every hand-painted detail chosen by her own hand. Every recipe on the menu is hers, developed and perfected in her own kitchen. She designs her restaurants as immersive worlds — part Parisian patisserie, part Southern grandmother's kitchen, part fairy tale. 'I want every guest to feel like the most important person in the room,' she says.
